A 214 carries structured milestones and reason codes against a shipment reference, and a well-integrated carrier fires them automatically as the load moves. The receiving TMS consumes them to keep load records current. In principle, that should make status a solved problem: every party's system always knows where the load is.
The assumption to reject is that the integration retired the status inbox. EDI coverage is uneven: many small carriers and owner-operators never send a 214, so their loads get chased by message instead. Feeds lag and misfire, and a delay code says nothing about whether the delivery appointment survives.
