What is a carrier scorecard?

Updated July 2026

A carrier scorecard is a structured record of how each carrier performs on the freight you give them: on-time pickup and delivery, claims frequency, invoice accuracy, and communication quality. Its job is to turn the next routing decision from a gut call into an informed one.

The raw material for a scorecard already exists in a broker's or forwarder's inbox, because the freight inbox is two-sided: shippers on one side, carriers on the other. Every carrier thread is signal. How fast a dispatcher confirms, whether a delay gets flagged before the shipper asks, how a claim gets handled, how often an invoice needs correcting. Communication belongs on the card as much as transit times do: industry research consistently ranks poor communication among the top reasons shippers leave a freight provider, and a shipper's experience of a carrier is mediated by exactly these threads.

What fails is the quarterly spreadsheet. Someone assembles it from memory, the loudest recent incident dominates, and by the review meeting the data is a season old. Anecdote-based carrier review punishes the carrier with one visible failure and misses the one who quietly goes dark on every exception. If the scorecard is not fed continuously from operational data, it is an opinion with a grid.

Aide, the agentic AI platform for customer experience, classifies every carrier-side thread by intent: check-call responses, delay notices, claims, settlement questions. That classification is what makes the inbox a data source, with response latency, proactive versus chased updates, and dispute frequency accruing to each carrier automatically, load after load. The operation's picture of its carrier base compounds instead of resetting every quarter. For the full two-sided freight inbox, see Aide for logistics and freight.

Frequently asked questions

What metrics go on a carrier scorecard?
On-time pickup and on-time delivery, tender acceptance rate, claims frequency and resolution time, invoice accuracy, and communication responsiveness: how fast the carrier confirms, and whether problems get flagged proactively or only after the shipper asks.
How often should a carrier scorecard be updated?
Continuously. The review conversation can be quarterly, but the data should accrue with every load. A scorecard rebuilt from memory at review time inherits every bias the scorecard was meant to remove.
