Payment declined reply template

The card was declined. Here is the way through.

Explain that the bank made the call, then give the three fixes that usually work, while the shopper still wants to buy.Updated · By Ziyad Basheer

Short answer

A payment is declined at checkout when the card issuer refuses it, most often for a billing address mismatch, a security check on an unfamiliar online payment, or not enough funds. The store never sees the full reason, so point the shopper to the fixes they control: the address, another payment method, or a call to their bank.

Sorry the payment did not go through. We never see your card details, so the decline comes from your bank. Three things usually fix it: make sure the billing address matches your card exactly, try another card or other payment method, or ask your bank to approve the payment. A declined payment is not charged, though some banks show a pending line for a few days.

Subject: Your payment did not go through
Hi customer.first_name, Thanks for getting in touch. Your card issuer declined the payment, so no order was placed and you have not been charged. What usually works: 1. Check that the billing address matches the one your bank holds for the card, postcode included. 2. Pay with a different card, or with PayPal / Shop Pay / another method you offer. 3. Call the number on the back of your card. Banks sometimes hold a first purchase from a new store until you confirm it. Your cart is still saved, so you can pick up where you left off.

Frequently asked questions

A bank's fraud checks treat a first purchase from a new store differently, and online payments check the billing address more strictly than a card reader. A mismatched address or postcode is the usual cause.

No. A declined payment is never taken, though some banks briefly show a pending line that then disappears.

Stores usually see little more than a decline code. The full reason sits with the card issuer, which is why the shopper's bank is the place to ask.

Yes, and name the methods your checkout actually offers. A shopper who hits a decline often still buys when a second option is one tap away.
