Order confirmation email

What is an order confirmation email?

· Glossary

Short answer

An order confirmation email is the automatic message a store sends right after a customer completes checkout, confirming what was bought, how much was paid, where it will ship and the order number. It is the customer's receipt and their first proof the purchase went through.

Shopify sends one by default and lets stores edit the template: branding, wording, the items table, and links back to the order status page. Most customers open it, which makes it one of the most read emails a store sends. It is also where many support journeys start, because it holds the order number customers need when they ask for help.

When it goes wrong, tickets follow quickly. "I did not get a confirmation, did my order go through?" usually means the email went to spam or the customer mistyped the address. "My address is wrong on the confirmation" is a race against fulfillment. "I was charged but have no email" can be a payment authorization with no completed order. And a confirmation that does not mention the delivery date, or that pre-order items ship later, invites a where-is-my-order question a day later.

Stores often go wrong by seeing the confirmation as a receipt and nothing more. It is also the first support touchpoint: a clear delivery expectation, a visible order number and an easy way to ask for help remove a large part of the questions that follow.

A store can put a link to its Aide chat page in order emails, so a reply about order #1062 starts with the right agent and inbox. Aide finds the order from the order number and matching email, reads its live status and, once the shopper is verified, can correct the address or stop the order if the store permits it. See how the Aide chat page and widget give shoppers one place to ask.
