What is an address change request?

Updated July 2026

An address change request is a customer's ask to redirect an order to a different shipping address after checkout, before the order ships. It is the most time-sensitive intent in ecommerce support: easy while the order is unfulfilled, and a shipment to the wrong address the moment it is not.

The causes are mundane: an autofill that picked the old apartment, a typo in the unit number, a move between order and delivery, a gift shipping to the buyer instead of the recipient. The fix is mundane too, a one-field edit in the commerce platform, but only inside the fulfillment window. Once the label prints and the package leaves, the same request becomes a multi-touch cleanup: carrier intercept attempts, a delivery to the wrong door, a replacement shipment, sometimes a written-off order. Which side of the window a request lands on is decided almost entirely by how fast it is read.

The frame to reject is the uniform service-level promise: an auto-reply committing to a response within a day, applied to every ticket alike. That promise is adequate for a sizing question and a guarantee of failure here, because the order will not wait for the queue. Address changes need to be recognized and acted on the moment they arrive, not discovered by an agent hours after the package shipped.

Aide, the agentic AI platform for customer experience, treats address changes as the time-critical intent they are. It recognizes the request the moment it arrives, checks when the order was placed and whether fulfillment has started, updates the address in the commerce platform when there is still time, and puts the order on hold and escalates when there is not. Every change is logged against the order, and the team sees only the cases that genuinely need them. The rest of the order intents this runs beside are on Aide for ecommerce customer service.

Frequently asked questions

Can a shipping address be changed after the order ships?
Rarely, and never reliably. Some carriers offer intercept or redirect services, but they are best-effort, often paid, and frequently too late. Once a package ships, the practical options are an intercept attempt, waiting for a return to sender, or reshipping.
Why are address change requests so urgent?
Because the request competes with the warehouse. Fast fulfillment shrinks the window in which an address is still editable, so a request that waits in a queue for hours often loses the race. A missed window means a package to the wrong address and a multi-touch cleanup.
