Short answer
Cart abandonment is when a shopper adds products to their online cart and leaves the store without completing the purchase. The abandonment rate is the share of created carts that never become orders. Most abandonment has nothing to do with support. People browse, compare, save items for payday, or get distracted. A meaningful slice, though, leaves because of a question nobody answered in time: will this arrive before Saturday, does the jacket run small, can I return it if the color is off, do you ship to Canada, is there a duty charge. Those shoppers were ready to buy and stalled on uncertainty.
That is the support angle on a problem usually owned by marketing. Recovery emails and discount codes chase the shopper after they have gone. A clear answer while they are still on the page removes the reason to leave. The two work together, but only one of them fixes the cause.
| Reason the shopper hesitates | Answer that keeps them |
|---|---|
| Delivery timing | a straight answer on shipping to their country |
| Fit or sizing | advice from the product's size guide |
| Return terms | the actual policy, in one sentence |
| Total cost | shipping and duties explained before payment |
| Trust in a new brand | quick, specific replies from a real business |
The popular reflex is to fire a discount at every abandoned cart. It trains regular customers to wait for a code, cuts margin on orders that would have happened anyway, and does nothing for the shopper whose question was about delivery. Answer the question first; save incentives for the carts where price was the reason.
Aide Chat knows which product and variant a shopper is viewing, and the team can watch the live cart change during the conversation. Merchants can show a proactive message on chosen pages, after time on the page or scroll depth, to invite questions before someone drifts away; proactive messages never appear at checkout, where chat stays support-only and waits to be opened. When a product card in chat fills the cart and the order follows, the sale shows up in Aide's analytics. Setup details are on proactive chat messages.
