Short answer
Address validation is the check that a shipping address is real, complete and deliverable, usually by comparing it with postal or carrier address data at checkout or before fulfillment. It catches missing apartment numbers, wrong postcodes, misspelled streets and addresses that do not exist. Most validation happens at checkout. Autocomplete suggests a standard address while the customer is typing, and a validation step warns when what they entered does not match a known address. Some stores add a second check before fulfillment, holding orders with doubtful addresses until someone confirms them. Shipping apps and carriers also correct small formatting errors when they print a label.
No check is perfect. Validation can confirm that 42 Elm Street exists, but not that the customer meant 24. It cannot tell that Maya autofilled her old address on order #1085, or that a building has three entrances and the unit number matters. That is why address problems still reach support, usually in one of two forms: the customer spots the mistake right after paying, or the carrier reports a delivery exception days later.
The common failure is relying on checkout validation as the only safeguard and then treating every later address request as a manual ticket. The early request is the easy one to fix. It just needs to be handled before the order ships.
Before and after shipping
| When the problem is found | Typical fix |
|---|---|
| At checkout | validation prompts the customer to correct it |
| After checkout, before shipping | change the address on the order |
| After shipping | carrier address correction or intercept, if available |
| After a failed delivery | return to sender, then reshipment |
When a shopper writes in to correct an address, Aide checks whether the order has shipped. If it has not and the shopper is verified, Aide updates the shipping address in Shopify, so the label prints with the right details. If the order has already left, the conversation goes to the team with the details attached. Read more on fixing a Shopify address before it ships.
