Short answer
Bracketing is a shopping habit where a customer orders the same item in two or more sizes or colors, keeps the one that fits or looks best, and sends the rest back. It is a rational response to uncertainty, and an expensive one for the store.Shoppers bracket when they cannot judge fit from the page. A first-time buyer between a medium and a large orders both. Someone unsure whether the sage or the stone jacket matches their coat orders both. Free returns make the choice effortless, since the customer pays nothing for the experiment. The store pays twice: once to ship the extra items out and again to bring them back, inspect them and return them to stock, often after the season has moved on.
Bracketing is not fraud. The customer intends to pay for one item and is following the policy exactly. That is why blunt policy changes, such as charging for every return, tend to hurt honest shoppers and conversion more than they reduce bracketing. The cause is missing information, and support is where much of that information can be supplied.
| Why the shopper brackets | What answers it before checkout |
|---|---|
| Unsure between two sizes | a fit recommendation from the size guide |
| Unsure how a style runs | a comparison with a style they already own |
| Unsure about a color | real photos or a clear description |
| Afraid the right size sells out | an honest answer about stock |
Watch for orders like #1091: the same sneaker in a 9, a 9.5 and a 10. That pattern tells the team the size chart, or the way it is explained, is not doing its job for that product. A short question answered before purchase, "I wear a 9.5 in your trail runner, what about the court shoe?", is worth more than any return policy tweak.
Aide answers fit questions before a shopper buys by reading the store's own fit guides and the variant stock on the Shopify product page, so a customer torn between two sizes gets a recommendation and an honest answer about which one is available. When the guide does not cover the question, Aide says so and offers the team rather than guessing. More on sizing and fit answers from your own guide.
