Short answer
A Shopify customer account is the signed-in area of a Shopify store where a shopper sees their orders, order status, saved addresses and, on many stores, returns. Shoppers usually sign in with a one-time code sent to their email rather than a password. For support, the account matters for one reason above all: identity. A customer who writes in from an anonymous chat could be anyone, so before discussing an order the team has to confirm it belongs to them, usually by asking for the order number and the email used at checkout. A customer who is signed in has already proved who they are. Their orders are known, and the conversation can start from the order instead of from a verification exchange.
Accounts also reduce simple tickets. A shopper who can see "fulfilled" and a tracking link in their account does not need to ask whether order #1052 has shipped. But accounts do not answer everything. The status may be stale, the parcel may be stuck, or the customer may want to change something the account page does not allow, such as an address after the order is placed.
| Shopper | What support knows at the start | First step |
|---|---|---|
| Signed in | who they are and which orders are theirs | answer the question |
| Guest with order number | the order they claim | match order number and email |
| Guest without details | nothing yet | ask for the order number |
A common mistake is building a separate contact form inside the account page that strips away everything the account already knows. The shopper signs in, then has to retype their order number and email into a form. Support should inherit the identity the store already established.
When a shopper is signed in to the store, Aide Chat recognizes them automatically, and their past conversations follow them across devices. A "Get help with this order" link in the customer account opens a chat with that order attached, so Aide can answer about it, or act on it within the limits the team has set, without asking who they are first. Guests confirm ownership with their order number and checkout email. More on how Aide verifies a shopper.
